Eleven-year-old Weida Saltenfass lives in a large house with her father and her demented grandmother. Her father is in the business of providing funeral services, and his funeral home is located right in the Saltenfass family home. The gloomy, funeral atmosphere of the house has a depressing effect on the girl. Mr. Saltenfass is completely immersed in work, after the death of his wife, he has no other interests in life. But everything changes when the funeral home hires a new employee. Cheerful Shelly forces Mr. Saltenfass to crawl out of his shell of emotional alienation - Weida has never seen her father so happy.
