Hortensia, a Black girl from London, loses her adoptive mother and decides to find her biological mother. At the same time, the story follows Cindy Rose, Hortensia’s mother, whom she is searching for, Roxana, Cindy’s daughter and the protagonist’s half-sister, along with her young boyfriend; and the protagonist’s mother’s brother and his wife, who live in a state of estrangement bordering on quiet hatred... Much will change with the arrival of a new family member in the house.
