Autumn Sonata 1978

Eva, the wife of a village pastor, invites her mother, Charlotte—whom she hasn’t seen in seven years—to visit her. Her mother is a world-renowned pianist—a talented, self-centered, aging woman who has outlived several husbands. Eva isn’t as talented as her mother, though she plays the piano quite well and has written two books; but her true calling is to be a homemaker, a wife, a mother, and a loving sister. Yet everything in her life seems to go wrong: she respects her husband deeply but does not truly love him; their son drowned at the age of four; and her mother has never loved her. Eva picks up her sick sister Helena from the hospital; Helena suffers from paralysis, and Eva is the only one who can understand her speech.
