One hundred thousand employees, two hundred thousand informants. Together, they are the party’s shield and sword—the infamous Stasi. Their method is suspicion. The popular writer and playwright Georg Dryman would have lived out his days, basking in the attention of grateful readers and of absolutely no interest to the secret police, had it not been for his affair with a famous theater actress.
